SMT (Surface Mount Technology) Assembly – Micro-Precision

Surface Mount Technology (SMT) is the backbone of modern electronics, enabling the creation of increasingly smaller and more efficient devices. This technology, which involves mounting components directly onto the surface of a PCB, is crucial for device miniaturisation and mass production. At Siltegro, this technology is one of the pillars of our business and a key element of our comprehensive contract electronics assembly offering.

What is SMT technology and why has it dominated the market?

SMT technology involves mounting electronic components, known as SMD (Surface Mount Device) components, directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs). Unlike the older THT technology, where components were threaded through holes in the board, the SMT process enables denser component packing and production automation. It is this change that has revolutionised electronics design, from smartphones to advanced industrial systems. As a result, each SMD board is smaller, lighter and often cheaper in mass production.

Key advantages of surface mounting

Miniaturisation and high component density: SMT technology allows significantly more components to be placed in a smaller area, which is crucial in modern devices.

Speed and efficiency: The fully automated assembly process guarantees high repeatability and precision. Production automation translates into high efficiency, making SMT the technology of choice for mass production.

Cost optimisation: With large volumes, the automated nature of SMT significantly reduces the unit cost of production.

Better electrical parameters: Shorter connections between components mean less signal delay and better high-frequency performance.

Our SMT assembly process – from design to finished module

To ensure the highest quality and repeatability, our SMT assembly process is carried out
in strictly controlled stages.

Solder paste application: Using precise, laser-cut stencils, solder paste is applied to the solder pads of the PCB.

Automatic component placement (Pick & Place): Fast and precise SMD assembly machines pick up components from feeders and place them on the board with great accuracy.

Reflow soldering: Boards with components that have been applied pass through a multi-zone reflow oven, where the solder paste melts, creating durable and reliable electrical connections.

Inspection and quality control (AOI): After soldering, each board passes through an automatic optical inspection (AOI) system, which verifies the correctness of each Component’s assembly, ensuring compliance with the design.

SMT machine park at Siltegro

Our SMT machine park has been selected with flexibility and scalability in mind. We have several modern SMT lines; each of them is adapted to handle different types of orders – from prototypes, through small and medium series, to large-scale production on our latest, high-performance line. This allows us to efficiently fulfil orders regardless of their size, while maintaining the highest standards of SMD technology.

SMT assembly and what next? Comprehensive support for your product

SMT assembly is often a key stage in the production of a finished device, but it is only one of many. At Siltegro, we offer comprehensive EMS services that support your product every step of the way. After surface mounting, we provide:

Mixed assembly (SMD and THT): Many projects require a combination of both techniques, which is why we also offer complementary THT through-hole assembly.

Electronic circuit testing: We offer programming, commissioning, and testing of modules in accordance with customer specifications and documentation.

We provide full assembly of electronic devices, including mechanical assembly, wiring preparation, and installation of the entire unit in the housing.

Why should you entrust us with SMT assembly?

We are a partner for every customer. Thanks to many years of experience gained from implementing our own diverse projects, we perfectly understand production challenges.

Quality confirmed by certificates: We operate in accordance with the ISO 9001 Quality Management System certificate. Our assembly complies with the rigorous international IPC-A-610 standard, which guarantees the highest quality and reliability of connections.

Flexibility and timely delivery: We have three specialised production lines, which allows us to be flexible in our approach to orders – from single prototypes to large series. One of our strengths is our short lead time.

We control every stage of the device’s development. We offer full technical support, from project analysis to the delivery of ready-made, tested modules.
